Dixie State College faculty, staff and students are welcoming a new sculpture garden on the north side of the Dolores Dore Eccles Arts Center just outside the centers art museum. There was a ground breaking ceremony for the sculpture garden on Jan. 26, with featured speakers DSC President Dr. Lee Caldwell and Mark Petersen, the executive director of cultural arts. The garden will be a tribute to artists we have in the community and the western United States, Caldwell said. The sculpture garden was always planned to be built on the north side of the fine arts building, but they thought it was much further down the road that it would be built, Petersen said.

Council to decide museum's fate

Council leaders are being accused of "cultural vandalism" as they prepare to decide on proposals to close one of London's few local museums. Following a 5m cut in government cash, plans are being considered to axe funding for the Wandsworth Museum. Other cuts in funding could also lead to the closure of the Battersea Arts Centre (BAC) and the De Morgan Centre. However, local groups want to be given more time to formulate a rescue plan for the museum. Neil Robson, vice-chairman of Wandsworth Historical Society, said: "With a breathing space, local societies would have the chance to come up with a rescue plan. .

Hub for Arab world could be force in global art, says Christie's

Dubai - Christie's International, the world's biggest auction house, is in Dubai "for the long term" and is betting the emirate will develop into a $250 million (R1.8 billion) market faster than the 20 years it took Hong Kong, according to Jussi Pylkkanen, president of Christie's Europe. Unfortunately, residents are going to be immortalized forever by a sculpture they never had a voice in choosing. The centennial sculpture was designed by MSU alumnus John Neering of Grand Rapids. It will be made of steel and welded to depict people joined together. The contest was announced in August 2006, and by the Oct. 1, 2006, deadline, the city had received only 12 submissions. Contestants must have lived in East Lansing within the last 100 years and be willing to work within a budget of $15,000. Funding for the sculpture comes from the East Lansing Arts Commission's annual budget. The centennial sculpture is scheduled to be unveiled in September.

Danish painter Carl Henning Pedersen donates 40 works to museum

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - Danish painter Carl Henning Pedersen, a key member of the Cobra art group known for its spontaneous expressionism, has donated 40 of his works to Denmark's national gallery. The collection of artworks from the 1950s to the late 1980s includes two of Pedersen's masterpieces - "Out in the Wide World," from 1988, and "Red Firebird," from 1972. Pedersen is known for colourful fantasy paintings featuring horses and birds. His wife, Sidsel Ramson, formally handed over the works Tuesday to the Statens Museum for Kunst in downtown Copenhagen. The 93-year-old artist was not able to attend the ceremony because of health reasons. Gallery director Allis Helleland said she was proud to receive the works "by one of Denmark's most important, modern artists." The canvases are set to go on display at the museum in June.

Sussex gallery ablaze with the colors of Burmese art

Newton - When Julie McWilliams cajoled the administration of Sussex County Community College into creating gallery space in the old library building, she was envisioning a space for student and faculty shows or perhaps the work of local artists. She wasn't thinking Burma. But now the gallery is awash in the ultra-saturated colors of a group of artists from Burma, or Mayanmar, that mysterious neighbor of far more open Thailand, courtesy of Richard Streiter, who came to Green Township via India. The opening reception is Friday, Jan. 26 from 6 to 8 and the exhibit will be up through March 9.The visitor is greeted by the bright pinks of the flowing robes of Buddhist nuns in an oil by Zaw Zaw Aung. More of the artist's paintings of monks and nuns hang among paintings of sunflowers that remind one of Van Gogh and Impressionistic street scenes.

Sculpture lovely to look at, and thought-provoking, too

Would you like to see a miracle? I'm talking about a 1-foot square slab of marble whose surface has been transformed into a vision of the Virgin Mary seated in the clouds with her infant son in her lap and cherubic angels in fluttering attendance. It's carved in low relief with breathtaking delicacy, and it looks as though the stone had melted away, leaving only this dreamy, uncannily luminous mirage. Made between 1425 and 1435 by Donatello, who was, next to Michelangelo, the greatest sculptor of the Italian Renaissance, "Madonna of the Clouds" welcomes visitors right at the start of "Donatello to Giambologna: Italian Renaissance Sculpture at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston," an excellent, medium-size exhibition. For the show, curators dusted off and gathered together almost every piece of Italian Renaissance sculpture the museum owns, including works in stone, bronze, wood, and clay.

Movado Men's Watch #0690301

This classic Museum dial watch, in black and gleaming gold-tone steel, has a sleek, ultra-thin profile and distinctly modern styling. It features the legendary black Museum dial with gold-tone Dauphine hands and a single concave dot at the 12 o'clock position. This is Movado's signature dial, made famous by American designer Nathan George Horwitt in 1947. Horwitt intended his design to be evocative of a sun dial, with the dot representing the sun at high noon. The thin, flat dial is framed by a rounded gold-tone steel bezel and presents on a contoured leather strap that fastens with a buckle closure. Other notable features include a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and precise Swiss quartz movement. Water-resistant to 30 meters, this watch can withstand splashes and brief immersion in water; however, it is not sufficiently resistant for swimming. About Movado Movado, one of the most celebrated watch brands in the world, traces its origins to the small village of La Chaux-de-faunds, Switzerland where, in 1881, a young watchmaker named Achille Ditesheim hired six assistants and opened a small workshop. He called his company Movado, a word which means, roughly, "always in motion." The company grew and prospered, evolving from a small pocketwatch manufacturer into a leading innovator and designer of precision wristwatches. Throughout its history, Movado has maintained its place at the pinnacle of innovation and excellence in design, craftsmanship and technology. Movado watches are crafted by highly-skilled watchmakers to meet the exacting standards of Swiss time technology. They are accurate to within seconds a year. All Movado watches are sealed and protected against water, moisture and dust, and individually tested to meet strict international standards of quality. A long-time dedicated supporter of the arts, Movado has, itself, been the recipient of over 200 international awards. Movado watches can now be found in the permanent collections of over 20 museums worldwide.

American Sculptor George Rickey Exhibition Opens at Vero Beach ...

VERO BEACH, Fla., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Vero Beach Museum of Art presents a major exhibition of works by American sculptor George Rickey on the centennial of his birth. A great winemaker who is also an artist/painter must have one helluva good one, I'm thinking. "Who is your muse?" I ask Eric Dunham. He pauses thoughtfully in mid-pour before answering. We are seated at the long wooden dining table in his winery, tasting the newly released 2003 Dunham Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon IX. The room is filled with dozens of square, one-ton stainless bins in which the 2006 vintage has been fermenting. Dion DiMucci is blasting through the speakers; "Runaround Sue" still running around after all these years. The wine, as with past releases, is pure cabernet, an artful blend of grapes from cool and warm sites. Sappy, supple and silky, it coats the palate and saturates the tongue with blackberries and cherries.

Porter County showcases Odyssey sculpture

VALPARAISO | Purdue University North Central - Porter County is showcasing four sculptures from the PNC Odyssey Arts and Cultural Events Series. The sculpture, "Rise" by David Noguchi, recently arrived at PNC - Porter County, located at 600 Vale Park Road, at the entrance of the Graduate Building. The museum is slightly off-the-beaten path for car-less Manhattanites, but under its current director, Tom Finkelpearl, it is building a substantial role for itself in the local community, and preparing for a renovation that Mr. Finkelpearl hopes will significantly increase its profile. The panorama, built for the 1964 World's Fair, is the museum's star attraction, and Mr. Finkelpearl readily acknowledges that, right now, it's more famous than the museum itself. "I meet people all the time, and I say, I'm the director of the Queens Museum,' and they go, Mm-hmm.' I say, We have this panorama,' and they say, I've been there!' I hate it, but we're working on it." The renovation, which will start in 2008, is budgeted at $37 million, and it will increase the museum's annual operating budget to $4.5 million from $3.2 million.

Art campaign on Saddam brings down the curtain

BHUBANESWAR: The art exhibition at Lalit Kala Akademi showcasing works of some of the top level painters, sculptors, graphic artists and ceramists from across the country concluded here on Saturday. The highlight of the closing day, besides the exhibition that showcased new art forms like Video art and fabric replication for the first time in the State, was the art campaign put together by the 16 participating artists voicing their opinion to the hanging of Saddam Hussein. The Sculpture Park has its 30th anniversary this year and its celebrations of that milestone include a number of projects including its appointment of Simon as its Visiting Artist 2007. .

France Won't `Clone' Louvre in Abu Dhabi, Museum Directors Say

Jan. 10 (Bloomberg) -- France has no plans to ``clone'' the Louvre Museum and will only lend artwork on a temporary, rotating basis to the Louvre's future Abu Dhabi offshoot, the directors of two museums involved in the discussions said. Stephane Martin, head of the Quai Branly Museum devoted to primitive art, and Anne Baldassari, chief of the Picasso Museum, were responding to accusations that French museums were selling out. Talks on the opening of a Louvre branch in the Gulf emirate and press reports of a potential payment to France of more than 500 million euros ($650 million) have sparked an irate editorial by well-known former museum managers, followed by almost 1,700 signatures to a petition on La Tribune de l'Art Web site. The future Abu Dhabi gallery would host temporary exhibitions of works from several French museums until it formed its own permanent collection, Martin and Baldassari said in interviews.

Sonic Fingerprints Safeguard Art

A near-perfect copy of a precious funeral urn called the Cratere dei Niobidi sits in an Italian cafe close to the University of Palermo. Restorer Lorella Pellegrino spied it there one morning before meeting with professor Pietro Cosentino, a geophysicist, to analyze the actual fifth-century-B.C. artifact. They were examining the real urn to see if it was healthy enough to loan for an exhibit in Beijing when Cosentino stumbled on the idea of using "sonic fingerprinting" to help end Italy's ongoing problem with faked and stolen artwork. "We started joking about how (the urn) might come back from China cloned," said Pellegrino, who works with the former seismologist much as a physician might with an X-ray expert. "That was when Cosentino realized the analysis could serve another purpose." Cosentino, 65, started using sonic tomography to study art about a year ago.

The Key To Any Good Party Is The Ice Sculpture

If you were wondering what happened to your invite to Gilbert Arenas's 25th birthday party, it got lost in the mail and somehow ended up in the hands of Jamie Mottram of Mister Irrelevant, the FanHouse, and formerly of Sports Bloggers Live. His Arenas Express Card got him into the party, and he was good enough to take some pictures and get some video footage. Here's Gilbert with some advice for his guests: "Everybody get drunk and make bad decisions." That's his advice? And I'm supposed to trust his shot selection? Oh, and here's a shot of the Gilbert Arenas ice sculpture. I think this picture was taken later in the party, because it appears to have been pretty well melted. He notified city officials late Thursday afternoon.Fund-raising for a building expected to cost about $15 million and operational expenses of about $5 million will start immediately, Fort Smith City Administrator Randy Reed said."We're certainly convinced that Fort Smith is a terrific place to have this museum," Pearson said.

Kingston Art Gallery ready to shape 2007

KINGSTON — As the seconds were counted down before 2006 clicked over to 2007, members and employees of the Kingston Art Gallery prepared to become an even larger part of the Little City by the Sea. One of the sailors said he later returned the sculpture to downtown Sarasota and alerted authorities through an anonymous phone call. Sarasota police have been unable to recover the sculpture. As part of the conditions of sale, TimberWest said it will require that one of the planes be donated to Port Alberni upon retirement to become a heritage attraction. .

PICTURING 2007 New Year promises cultural developments on KC’s art ...

Last year Steinkamp captured the public's imagination with her magical computer-animated projection of a tree changing from season to season in the Kemper's "Decelerate" show. This time around, with the museum's entire main gallery given over to her inspired orchestrations of light, motion and sound, prepare for total sensory overload. But before the Kemper delights, Grand Arts has a very different sensory experience in store for art lovers beginning Jan. 12, when the gallery walls will be painted with the smell of sweat from 15 anonymous men. The project, "The FEAR of Smell — the Smell of FEAR," by Berlin-based artist Sissel Tolaas, will feature synthetic replications of these male smells in spray bottles, along with the same scents, micro-encapsulated and mixed into wall paint.

Fund launch for sculpture

THE Trafalgar School at Downton has launched an appeal to raise funds which will turn a papier-mâché figure of a skateboarder made by a former student into a bronze sculpture. Once cast in bronze, at an estimated cost of £20,000, the skateboarder will go on permanent display at the school's entrance. The figure was made originally by last year's head boy, Luke Ridley, and was exhibited in the annual School and Village Art Exhibition in May 2005. Professional artist and award-winning designer Pete Gilbert, who lives in the New Forest and was also exhibiting, judged the work to be of such a high standard it merited greater exposure. Encouraged by Mr Gilbert and other artists at the exhibition, the school says it plans to turn the sculpture into a symbol of the school's regeneration as a centre for excellence in all aspects of the arts, for which it has gained specialist status, and to raise the school's profile.

Museum acquires new works by Old Masters

The Columbia Museum of Art regularly adds to its collection though gifts and purchases, but those artworks rarely are hundreds of years old. Last week, though, the museum acquired four Old Masters artworks: paintings by Sebastien Bourdon, Gonzales Coques and Bartholomeus Breenbergh, all from the 1700s, and a 1514 etching by Albrecht Durer . "I don't think the museum has made purchases of this magnitude in recent history," said Todd Herman, chief curator. The works will go on display early next year. These and other art purchases this year cost about $90,000 — the most the museum has spent in many years, said Karen Brosius, museum director. "Getting a Bourdon and Breenburgh — that's great," said David Steel, curator of European art at the N.C.
